Program History

In the Spring of 1999, Mark Juhl informed St. Joseph Christian board members that he would be starting a football program at St. Joseph Christian School that summer. Coach Juhl had already won 4 state titles in five years as a head coach at Midway-Denton by the time he made the decision to bring football to SJCS. In the first year of MSHSAA eligibility (2000), the fledgling program went 7-2 to finish second in the district standings. The following year, the Lions won the district title for the first time and finished one game short of a state championship appearance. Since 1999, St. Joseph Christian has won 9 district titles, appeared in 5 state championships and won 1 state championship. The program was 135-55 through 2016 with Coach Juhl having coached all but one season (2015).

In 2017, the second head coach in school history, Mark’s son Steve Juhl, coached his second year as the head coach of the Lions. Coach Troy Schenk is the third SJCS head football coach. His tenure began in 2018.

Joining forces with Northland Christian School, the Lions played their first full season of 11-man football in 2019. 2021 will see the Lions return to their roots as an 8-man football school.

Coach Schenk Bio

Coach Troy Schenk became the third head football coach at St. Joseph Christian School beginning in the Spring of 2018 and the first 11-man football coach in 2019. Coach Schenk brings with him 14 years of college coaching experience in the states of Kansas, Ohio, and Illinois. In his collegiate career, Coach Schenk has a diverse skill-set having served as an Assistant Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator, Defensive Coordinator, Special Teams Coordinator, Linebacker Coach, Tight-Ends Coach, Offensive Line Coach, Defensive Line Coach, and Recruiting Coordinator while developing over 25 All-Conference players. As Defensive Coordinator at Trinity International University (Deerfield, IL) Coach Schenk had a rush defense that ranked 5th in the country and was 18th in total defense while developing three All-Conference players including the 3rd leading tackler in the nation. As Offensive Coordinator at Malone University (Canton, OH) Coach Schenk’s running game ranked 9th nationally in rushing yards per game and was 6th nationally in total offense and set over 200 school records in his tenure. At Sterling College (Sterling, KS) he was part of the coaching staff that coached the team with the nation’s longest losing streak to a .500 season and best turnaround in school history. “My primary objective as Head Football Coach for SJCS is to provide an environment where lives are enhanced and changed for the sake of Christ. The goals of our football staff will be to challenge student athletes to pursue excellence spiritually, academically, and athletically.”
